Adam C. Ellison, MD

Dr. Ellison is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with fellowships in both sports medicine and shoulder & elbow surgery. He focuses on treating patients with shoulder and elbow issues, offering surgical, non-surgical and minimally invasive procedures to help relieve pain and/or recover from injuries. Dr. Ellison also treats knee and hip conditions commonly found in athletes, weekend warriors and anyone with well used joints.

Dr. Ellison earned his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Brigham Young University. His engineering mind served him well at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine in Rochester, MN, where his research included work in the Mayo Biomechanics Laboratory comparing different devices used in proximal femoral osteotomies (surgery to correct upper thigh bone alignment) in pediatric patients. He also worked in the Mayo Clinic Tissue Engineering Lab and created 3D scaffolds from a biodegradable polymer for potential use in future bone or joint reconstruction procedures.

Dr. Ellison did his surgical internship at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ, completed his residency at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC and then went on to complete his two fellowships: Orange County Sports Medicine Fellowship in Irvine, CA, and Melbourne Shoulder and Elbow Centre Fellowship in Melbourne, Australia.

When Dr. Ellison is not putting patients back together, he's putting woodstrip canoes together or enjoying other woodworking projects, playing basketball, tennis and volleyball, and spending time with his family in the great Alaska outdoors.

MEMBERSHIPS

  • Member of American Academy of Orthopedic surgeons
  • Board Certified member of American Board of Orthopedic surgeons

RESEARCH

  • Georgetown University Hospital (Aug 2006 - July 2009)
Dr. Scott Edwards. Platelet-rich plasma injections for chronic elbow lateral epicondylitis — a multicenter study evaluating the efficacy of injecting a platelet-rich plasma derived from the patients' own blood into their chronic tennis elbow.
  • Mayo Clinic Tissue Engineering Lab (Nov 2002 - Apr 2004)
Principal Investigator - Dr. Yaszemski. Created 3D scaffolds from a biodegradable polymer using computer-aided design (CAD) and rapid prototyping technology. Using this technique we could closely control the geometry of the scaffolds which in the future may be used for bone or joint reconstruction.
  • Mayo Clinic - Biomechanics laboratory (Dec 2001 - Apr 2004)
Attending Orthopedic Surgeon - Dr. Anthony Stans. Compared different devices used for proximal femoral osteotomies in pediatric patients; devised protocol to test devices' mechanical strength while mounted into canine femurs.
  • Brigham Young University (Dec 1997 - May 2000)
Faculty Adviser - Dr. Eastman. Worked as the acting project manager for the GoldHelox X-ray telescope designed to ride in the space shuttle and take images of the sun. Traveled to different NASA bases for testing and meetings over the duration of the project and functioned as the mechanical engineering team leader, the integration team leader, a designer and machinist.
