Fracture Care & Trauma

A fracture is a broken bone. It may be cracked, completely broken or even shattered. Fractures are most commonly caused by trauma such as a fall, sports or work injury or motor vehicle accident.

Common Symptoms of a Broken Bone:

  • Pain (often worse with movement)
  • Swelling and tenderness around the injury
  • Bruising and/or discoloration
  • Deformity — a limb may look "out of place" or a part of the bone may puncture through the skin
  • Exposed bone ("open fracture"): call 911 and head to the nearest ER.

Diagnosis typically involves getting an x-ray to confirm and precisely locate and identify the type break — all of which will factor into how best to treat it.

Fracture Treatment

Broken bones heal by forming new bone around the edge of the broken part. So bone pieces are put into position (reduction) if needed and immobilized using a cast, brace or traction or external fixation, until they heal. Depending on the type of fracture, surgery is sometimes necessary to secure and reposition the bones correctly.
