Michael L. Reyes, MD – Joining September 2019

Dr. Reyes is a fellowship-trained joint replacement surgeon, focusing on total hip and knee replacements. He also has subspecialty training in complex hip & knee reconstructions, including revision surgeries, and is on the forefront minimally invasive techniques that help patients recover faster and experience less pain.

After completing fellowships in both orthopedic trauma and joint replacement surgery at the University of Southern California, Dr. Reyes went on to become Department Chief at the Bone and Joint Center at Straub Clinic & Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii. He came to Alaska in 2017 and served as Medical Director at the Hip & Knee Replacement Center of Excellence at Central Peninsula Hospital. In 2019, he joined the joint replacement team at OPA in Anchorage.

Dr. Reyes says his greatest inspiration for helping people came from his parents. Both were physicians specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. "I grew up seeing how their work took patients from injury and disease to functional improvement. This helped me realize how gratifying it is to have a role in someone's healing. Their passion for their work was infectious," said Reyes.

Today Dr. Reyes has over two decades of surgical experience, has performed thousands of joint replacements, and stays abreast of current technological advances in the field. He has been involved in innovations such as advances in computer navigation in joint replacement surgery, MIS (minimally invasive surgery), quadriceps-sparing total knee replacement surgery, and direct anterior total hip replacement surgery.

When not helping people in the clinic, Dr. Reyes is helping folks as a volunteer or enjoying the Alaskan outdoors – hiking, stand-up paddling, and scuba diving. He is an avid adventurer & world traveler.
