OPA introduces new spine procedure to Alaska.

OPA’s spine surgery team introduces the “iOflex®” procedure — a minimally invasive alternative to traditional decompression surgery. 

In May of 2012, OPA spine surgeon Mark E. Flanum, MD was to first to perform the surgery in Alaska. Using newly developed flexible instruments that enabled him to keep healthy bones and tissues in tact, Dr. Flanum made just two small incisions and removed overgrown bone and tissue pressing on the spinal nerve of his 85-year old patient and relieved her spinal stenosis symptoms.  Dr. Flanum and fellow OPA spine surgeon James M. Eule, M.D., have now performed several similar surgeries, all at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage.
